Women and Youth in STEM Fields: WYSE Project Yields Promising Results
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in Tunisia has released the results of its WYSE project, launched in 2025, which aims to enhance the employability of women and youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The project has achieved significant success, with 70% of active young women in the program now concentrated in the fields of computer science, technology, and artificial intelligence.
Key Findings
According to a recent statement by UN Women Tunisia, the WYSE project was designed to address the challenges faced by female graduates in STEM fields in finding employment. The initiative relies on the involvement of the private sector, which is strongly encouraged to promote gender equality within its workforce.
The flagship event launched in 2025 brought together 104 female graduates and 29 companies. This mobilization has yielded positive results, with 41.3% of participants already integrated into the labor market, allowing for the direct recruitment of 43 young women in STEM fields.
Sector Breakdown
The organization notes that computer science leads the way, capturing 44% of the active group. Technology and artificial intelligence follow closely, with 26%, while data and mathematics represent 16% of the workforce. Engineering and biological sciences trail behind, with 9% and 5%, respectively.
Future Plans
Building on this success, UN Women has confirmed its intention to launch the WYSE 2 phase, supported by the Dutch Embassy in Tunisia in partnership with the Youth Employment Fund.
