Ticket Inspection in Public Transport: A Call for Action
It seems that, within transport companies, things are finally starting to move on the ticket‑inspection front – but only at the main stations. This is far from sufficient, even though it is a step forward.
The real control, however, should take place inside the train cars, just as it was done in a not‑so‑distant past when fare‑evasion (a practice that has always existed and will always exist) was the exception.
On the other hand, regardless of where inspections occur, the presence of ticket controllers on board is a guarantee of safety for passengers and a strong deterrent against incorrigible vandals.
As for the personnel needed for this task, they are readily available: transport operators already have a plethora of staff that could be reassigned to ticket‑checking duties.
