Why Beware of Waste

Ramadan: A Month of Reflection, Solidarity, and Waste

The month of Ramadan is not only a time for contemplation and solidarity; it is also, and above all, a month of waste.

But this waste is truly record‑breaking because those who fast don’t eat with their stomachs—they eat with their eyes and their cravings.

These cravings are hard to suppress, and most of the food ends up in the trash, even though it could be saved for the next day or—at the very least—donated to people in need.

A simple walk past the dumpsters makes the problem obvious. Yet, after seeing the piles of discarded food, we are told that “everything is overpriced.” It’s hard to make sense of that.
