Serpents and Vipers Spotted in Urban Areas: A Natural Phenomenon with Environmental Concerns
The appearance of snakes and vipers in urban areas during this time of year is a natural phenomenon linked to the reptile breeding season, according to environmental expert and Secretary General of the Association Observatoire de l'Environnement, Habib Dlensi.
Speaking on Diwan FM on Monday, May 11, 2026, Dlensi explained that the increased presence of reptiles corresponds to their usual biological cycle, particularly during the breeding season. However, he emphasized that this phenomenon is now amplified and more visible due to the progressive disappearance of their natural habitats, including "tabias," which is linked to growing urbanization and certain environmental imbalances, such as the proliferation of the cochineal insect.
According to Dlensi, the reduction of these natural spaces forces snakes to move into inhabited areas, increasing encounters with human populations. He also warned of the ecological consequences of this evolution. The disappearance of traditional habitats for reptiles could, in the long term, lead to the extinction of certain species and cause an imbalance in local ecosystems.
Key Points:
- The appearance of snakes and vipers in urban areas is a natural phenomenon linked to the reptile breeding season.
- The progressive disappearance of natural habitats, including "tabias," is amplifying this phenomenon.
- Urbanization and environmental imbalances, such as the proliferation of the cochineal insect, are contributing to the loss of natural habitats.
- The disappearance of traditional habitats for reptiles could lead to the extinction of certain species and cause an imbalance in local ecosystems.
