The Saga of Cinema Hall Closures Continues
The series of events surrounding the closure of movie theaters seems to be never-ending.
This time, it's final. Ciné Jamil has joined the list of closed theaters, a number that is steadily increasing. From 114 theaters in the 1970s, the country now has only 14 theaters currently open. This bitter reality reflects a deep cultural crisis and adds to the lack of democratization of access to cinema and the geographical and cultural disparities that most governorates face, with 17 of them having only one movie theater.
Isn't it time to rethink our reform system by establishing a research and development department within the governing ministry? This department could carefully consider the issue and play a rescue role in preserving these aspects of our collective memory, which should not be allowed to fade away under any circumstances.
