Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation Day in Tunisia 2025
Organized by the Association "Les Amis des Oiseaux" (AAO/BirdLife in Tunisia), the National Gene Bank (BNG), the General Directorate of Forests (DGF), the General Directorate of Environment and Quality of Life (DGEQV), and the National Committee of Members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Tunisia, with the support of the IUCN Mediterranean Cooperation Center and the Tour du Valat, the Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation Day in Tunisia 2025 is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 26.
Continuity of Efforts
This event is a continuation of the bird and biodiversity monitoring days organized in 2023 and 2024. Under the theme "Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation in Tunisia," this meeting contributes to the efforts to establish a global biodiversity monitoring system and information exchange. It is based on the example of the International Waterbird Census (IWC) in Tunisia and its results for the period 2019-2023.
Objectives
The meeting will address the implementation of the global biodiversity framework by establishing a national coordination mechanism for all matters related to nature and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). The day, organized on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the Gene Bank in Tunis, starting at 8:30 am, aims to:
- Disseminate updated information on the status and trends of waterbird populations in Tunisia during the period from 2019 to 2023
- Contribute to the establishment of an effective and sustainable legal and institutional framework for national supervision and coordination of the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) program
- Select three KBAs for priority support for updating and consolidating scientific data that led to their designation and potentially revising their territorial boundaries, to be implemented by the organizations or institutions that proposed these sites in close collaboration with the National KBA Coordination Group and the KBA Partnership
Methodology
The organizers of the day plan to achieve these objectives through a series of expert presentations, "Questions & Answers" sessions, and discussions, the results of which will be made available to all participants and concerned institutions and organizations.
