Spanish Foreign Minister Denies Military Cooperation with the United States Against Iran

Madrid, 5 March 2026 – Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, has categorically refuted any claim that his country has agreed to cooperate militarily with the United States in a war against Iran. The denial comes after White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt announced that Spain had given its consent to work with the U.S. military.

The Spanish daily El País reported that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reiterated this morning that Spain will not take part in such a conflict.

Leavitt had previously stated that the U.S. armed forces were coordinating their actions with Spain and that Washington expected its allies to help overthrow the Iranian regime. She specifically claimed that Spain had accepted military cooperation with the U.S. regarding Iran.

In response, Madrid confirmed that it will not allow the use of the American bases at Rota and Morón for operations linked to a potential U.S.–Israeli strike on Iran.

The Spanish government stressed that any intervention without a United Nations mandate would constitute a violation of international law. Sánchez also said he is prepared to bear the political consequences that may arise from this stance.
