Tunisia to See 5% Salary Increase in 2026, Minister Says
Minister of Social Affairs, Issam Lahmar, Hails 5% Salary Hike as "Excellent" Amid Challenging Economic Context
Speaking at a ceremony to honor workers from the public and private sectors on Friday, May 1, 2026, Minister Lahmar emphasized that the uniform 5% salary increase does not present significant disparities between different professional categories. He noted that the salary hikes will be implemented over a three-year period, with a pace he considers suitable to keep pace with the evolution of living standards in Tunisia.
The minister stressed that the decision was not influenced by the country's national and international economic conditions, with the modalities of implementation clearly defined in the 2026 Finance Law. He also highlighted that salary increases are a fundamental pillar of the Tunisian state's policy, aligning with President Kais Saied's vision to ensure better visibility for both businesses and workers.
Minister Calls for Deep-Reform of Social Justice System
Issam Lahmar also emphasized that achieving social justice requires profound reforms, even suggesting the need for a "legislative revolution." He explained that the current laws are no longer in line with the current period's requirements and can, in some cases, hinder the achievement of economic and social objectives.
Salary Increases to be Implemented Gradually
It is worth noting that the decrees related to salary increases in the public and private sectors were published on Thursday, April 30, 2026, with a gradual implementation plan over the coming years.
