Tunisian Court Rejects Bail Request for Former Football Federation President
On Wednesday, the Criminal Chamber of the First Instance Tribunal in Tunis made a ruling regarding the judicial fate of Wadii El Jari, the former President of the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF). The court rejected the bail request submitted by his lawyers, as well as those of other co-accused, and decided to postpone the examination of the case to May 26th.
The case revolves around allegations of irregularities in the conclusion of a contract with one of the technical staff members of the national teams. Earlier in this case, the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal had already confirmed the guilt of the former federal leader, reducing his prison sentence from four to three years. A second accused, a technical staff member currently at liberty, had his six-year prison sentence upheld.
The charges brought against the defendants are particularly severe. They include exploiting a public official's position to obtain an unjustified advantage, either for themselves or for others, causing harm to the administration. The accused are also being pursued for violating the regulations in place during these financial operations and for complicity in these acts.
