US and UK Lift Sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa
The United States and the United Kingdom announced on Friday the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, following a similar decision adopted by the United Nations Security Council. This decision comes on the eve of a scheduled meeting between Al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump. The European Union has confirmed that it will follow the same approach.
Background
According to official statements, sanctions have also been lifted for Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab. The US State Department specifies that these measures reflect "the progress made by the Syrian leadership after the departure of former President Bashar Al-Assad", particularly in the areas of drug control, elimination of chemical weapons, and regional security strengthening.
International Response
A European Union spokesperson stated that the UN's decision will guide the measures adopted by the European bloc. The UK had already lifted some sanctions against Syria in April, and the EU had eased its economic sanctions in May. However, restrictions related to arms and security remain in place.
EU Commitment
The European Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting "a peaceful and inclusive transition process, led by the Syrians, to build a better future for all Syrians".
Recent Developments
For several months, Washington has been calling on the 15-member Security Council to ease sanctions against Syria. In May, Donald Trump announced a major policy shift, stating his intention to lift sanctions imposed on the country.
