U.S. Raises Travel Advisory Level for Several Middle‑East Countries
The U.S. Department of State has upgraded its travel‑alert level to Level 3 for Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Jordan, urging Americans to “reconsider travel” to these destinations.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the decision was announced on Wednesday. The State Department also noted that Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar are currently classified at the same risk level, while Egypt remains at Level 2, which calls for “increased vigilance.”
What the Alert Levels Mean
The U.S. travel‑alert system uses four tiers to assess security risks:
| Level | Guidance |
|---|---|
| 1 | Exercise normal precautions |
| 2 | Exercise increased caution |
| 3 | Reconsider travel; avoid non‑essential trips |
| 4 | Do not travel; avoid all travel to the area |
Level 3 therefore advises travelers to postpone non‑essential trips, whereas Level 4— the highest tier— recommends a complete travel ban.
Immediate Action for U.S. Citizens in Bahrain
The U.S. Embassy in Manama has urged American nationals to leave Bahrain immediately “if it can be done safely.” The embassy also announced the suspension of all routine consular services until further notice.
