The Ultra Mirage El Djérid: A Symbol of Resilience and Development in Southern Tunisia
The organizers of the Ultra Mirage El Djérid have announced that the event marks the beginning of the tourist season in Tozeur. This year's ninth edition has attracted a record number of participants from all five continents.
More than just an endurance race, the Ultra Mirage El Djérid has become a driving force for local development and a symbol of resilience in southern Tunisia.
A Record-Breaking Edition with Notable Innovations
From September 25 to 28, 2025, Tozeur will host the Ultra Mirage El Djérid (Umed), an international showcase for Tunisia and a catalyst for regional development. With 500 participants, including over 350 runners from 28 nationalities, the event highlights the growing attractiveness of southern Tunisia and confirms the power of sports as a vector for cohesion and radiance.
This year's edition has introduced several innovations, including a new starting point at the majestic Lac Chamsa nature reserve, offering runners an unprecedented backdrop. Another innovation is the creation of the "Assurances Biat Trail 25 km by Ultra Mirage," a more accessible distance that allows enthusiasts and companions to experience the magic of the Sahara without the demands of extreme formats. The starting village will also be transformed into a festive and cultural hub, combining sports, local craftsmanship, and entertainment for visitors.
A Long-Standing Partnership with Assurances Biat
At the heart of this adventure, Assurances Biat has renewed its partnership for the ninth consecutive year. More than just a sponsor, the company has established itself as a committed actor in the long term. "The Ultra Mirage El Djérid embodies an exceptional human and sporting adventure. As a partner, we proudly support initiatives that unite sports, culture, and solidarity," said Mehdi Masmoudi, Director General of Assurances Biat, during a press conference held in Tunis.
For Masmoudi, this partnership goes beyond mere financial support. "Since 2017, we have been building a shared vision with the organizers. Our goal is to democratize ultra-trail running, while also contributing to local development and the empowerment of young people."
A Lasting Social Impact
Assurances Biat's commitment is part of an ambitious CSR strategy. After supporting the development of a multipurpose room at the Tozeur youth center last year, the company is financing the creation of a multimedia room equipped with a robotics club. This initiative aims to provide young people in the region with real educational and professional prospects.
In parallel, the event highlights the expertise of local artisans, particularly women, who will be able to exhibit and sell their creations to international participants. "Each runner will leave with a souvenir made in the region, transforming the sporting experience into a genuine cultural immersion," added Masmoudi.
A Locomotive for Tourism in Southern Tunisia
For the event's organizer and founder, Amir Ben Gacem, the Umed is first and foremost a human and collective adventure. "When we launched this project in 2017, with only 60 runners and 11 nationalities, Tunisia was going through a difficult period. Many people had doubts. But we believed in the potential of the Sahara and the power of sports. Today, the Ultra Mirage brings together 28 nationalities and has become a pilgrimage for trail enthusiasts from around the world."
Ben Gacem also emphasizes the importance of the partnership with Assurances Biat, which he describes as a "trust and values alliance." This partnership has enabled the event to navigate crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic, and gain credibility internationally.
Over the years, the Ultra Mirage has become more than just a sporting competition; it has become a driving force for tourism and regional development. Each edition attracts visitors from diverse backgrounds, who discover not only the landscapes of the Djérid but also the warmth of the local welcome.
"For us, Ultra Mirage is a pilgrimage. A moment when we reunite with friends, runners from all over the world. It's a unique meeting point, where sports blend with cultural discovery," says Ben Gacem.
With its breathtaking landscapes, convivial atmosphere, and social commitments, the Ultra Mirage El Djérid has become a brand in its own right. More than just an event, it's a total human experience, where every step tells a story: one of courage, solidarity, and Tunisian pride.
In Tozeur, the tourist season begins once again under the sign of endurance, sharing, and openness to the world.
