Twerikh Tounes: A Satirical Comedy that Redefines Tunisian History

The new play "Twerikh Tounes" (Stories of Tunisia) by Hatem Karoui premiered yesterday at El Teatro in Tunis, with two more performances scheduled for today, Friday, October 31, and tomorrow, Saturday, November 1. This interdisciplinary work combines theater, music, dance, and video projections to revisit the major historical milestones that have shaped the country.

A Mirror to the Past

The play is a satirical comedy that challenges the traditional narratives of Tunisian history, presenting a "faithless mirror" to the fixed stories found in history books. As Hatem Karoui notes, "If you're looking for a history lesson, you're in the wrong place. Here, we laugh at ourselves first, and at those who think history is untouchable. Come laugh with us... at yourselves!" The play features a mix of real and imaginary historical characters, stripping away the sacred aura from past conflicts and battles.

An Interdisciplinary Approach

The play incorporates original music, choreographed sequences illustrating key moments in Tunisian history (such as Hannibal's campaigns, the Hilalian migration, the Ottoman-Spanish conflict, and the national struggle for independence), and video projections that enrich the visual tableaux and facilitate scene transitions. The music is composed by Anes Ezzamali, with rap performances by Mehdi Chammam/Massi, and lighting and set design by Sabri El Atrous. The costumes are created by Abir Nayt Ali, with production by Rahma Dridi and graphic design by Mehdi Chabbi.

Hatem Karoui: A Pioneer of Slam in Tunisia

Hatem Karoui is a pioneer of slam in Tunisia, with a career spanning over two decades. He began his artistic journey in 2001 with the play "Ici Tunis" by Taoufik Jebali and has since performed in notable productions such as "Révolution" (2011) and "Boomerang" (2024), directed by Foued Litaiem. His one-man show "Boomerang" offers a reflection on the challenges of modern society, inspired by his experiences in Canada.

The Story Behind the Play

"Twerikh Tounes" draws its roots from the profound and legitimate questions that many Tunisians have asked themselves since the Revolution. These questions, often fueled by doubts and challenges, concern the darker aspects of the country's official history. The play tackles the identity debates that have resurfaced, including the resurgence of tribalism, calls to "reopen" Tunisia, and claims of Amazigh identity. By revisiting these historical episodes and introducing fictional characters, the play offers a satirical and humorous reading of Tunisian history, questioning the certainties that many still hold dear.

A Comedy that Reconciles with the Past

In essence, "Twerikh Tounes" is a satirical comedy that approaches the formation of a people's collective consciousness with humor and sensitivity. Through this accessible and lively approach, the play aims to reconcile young generations with their history, encouraging them to rediscover Tunisia's cultural and political heritage and revive their pride in belonging to a plural nation whose influence extends beyond its borders. As Hatem Karoui explains, "We want to make history accessible and fun, to inspire a sense of pride and belonging among young Tunisians, and to show that our history is not just a series of dry facts, but a rich and complex tapestry that continues to shape our identity today."
