Syrian Foreign Minister Announces Lifting of Restrictions on Diplomatic Mission in Washington
The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Assaad Al Sheibani, announced today, Tuesday, November 11, 2025, that he had received a decision signed by Washington lifting the restrictions imposed on the Syrian diplomatic mission and embassy in Washington, allowing them to fully resume their activities. "Today, Syria resumes the exercise of its diplomatic role in complete freedom on American soil, within the framework of the strategic plan of the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Al Sheibani wrote on the X platform, according to the "Sky News" website. Al Sheibani added: "We have received a decision signed by my friend the American Secretary of State, which lifts all the legal measures previously imposed on the Syrian mission and the embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic... Once again, and this will not be the last, Syrian diplomacy confirms its active presence and its ability to make constant progress in lifting obstacles and paving the way for a more open and stable Syrian future." The Syrian embassy thus officially resumes its activities after more than 12 years of closure. This development follows the meeting between Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa and American President Donald Trump at the White House, a central milestone in the normalization of bilateral relations. Washington had closed the Syrian embassy in April 2014, as well as the honorary consulates in Troy, Michigan, and Houston, Texas, due to what the US State Department had then described as atrocious violations committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people.
