According to a statement by Zied Laïdi, President of the Provisional Bureau of the Tunisian Weightlifting Federation, Belkhir had gone out for a short walk inside the airport after the plane landed, leaving her passport and luggage with the delegation. However, she did not return, and her fate remained unknown despite attempts to contact her.
Investigation and Response
Laïdi indicated that the Tunisian authorities acted immediately to coordinate the search with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the competent Norwegian authorities. He added that there are indications suggesting that the champion decided to leave voluntarily, as she would have informed her coach of her decision and sent a message of apologies.

Ghofrane Belkhir is considered one of the most prominent weightlifting athletes in Tunisia, having carried the national flag at several international and continental events.
