La Presse — Decidedly, the descendants of Queen Dido are making their mark in every field

Whether in sport or in other sectors, our daughters are giving their all. They are persevering and are increasingly being cited in specialised disciplines.

Women dominate the 2026 medical class in Sfax

  • 75 % of the 2026 graduating class at the Faculty of Medicine of Sfax are women.
  • This is a source of pride and continuity for the School of Carthage, which boasts a 2,500‑year history, and for its heir, the School of Kairouan.

How many of these future doctors will go on to enrich the field of sports medicine?

Recent sporting highlights

3,000‑metre steeplechase champion Maroua Bouzayani

Maroua Bouzayani, our 3 000 m steeple champion, has recently taken part in international cross‑country races to gauge her preparation level – and the results have been positive.

Long‑jump success for Nourhan Harmi

Tunisian champion Nourhan Harmi recently claimed second place in the indoor women’s long‑jump competition, clearing 5.86 m at the International Meeting in Franconville, France.

Commendable efforts in officiating

The appointment of Tunisian referees to officiate every match of the national competitions is part of a broader strategy to maintain a continuous Tunisian presence at major international events such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Championships.

  • This demonstrates Tunisia’s confidence in its officials and reinforces their visibility on the world stage.
  • Recent years have seen intensive training programmes for Tunisian referees, culminating in two teams earning the International Federation badge – a major achievement for Tunisian handball that must be preserved.

Highlight: Wajdan Kashida & Hiba Abdelkader

Following their outstanding performance at the Mediterranean Junior Handball Championship in Kosovo, referees Wajdan Kashida and Hiba Abdelkader were selected by the Mediterranean Handball Federation’s Refereeing Committee to officiate the final between Spain and Croatia on Saturday, 14 February 2026. They managed the match with distinction.

  • This marks the second consecutive year that Tunisian referees have been chosen for the Mediterranean Championship final, after Cherif and Abed were selected last year in Montenegro.

Handball: Women’s African Nations Championship (CAN) in Tunisia

Our female handball teams are returning to the international stage with force. Consequently, the African Handball Confederation has officially appointed Tunisia to host the 2026 Women’s African Nations Championship.

  • Planned for November/December 2026, this will be the 27th edition of the women’s African Nations Championship, following the tournament held in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • The competition will serve as a qualifier for the World Championship.

Tunisia, a strong nation in women’s handball on the continent, will bring together the best African national teams.

Looking ahead

We are not revisiting every single achievement of our female athletes, but given our long‑standing belief that the margin for improvement among our daughters is enormous, it is clear that more resources, better scouting, and a greater number of contests and competitions are needed to translate potential into results.
