Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) Launches Environmental Projects in El Mdhilla
The Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) has planned several environmental projects in the El Mdhilla delegation, with a total budget estimated at 140 million dinars, announced Abdessalem Chwaya, Regional Director of GCT in Gafsa, on Monday.
Environmental Initiatives
During a working session held at the Gafsa governorate headquarters to monitor the development and environmental situation in Mdhilla, the official specified that among these projects are:
- The conversion of the sulfuric acid unit at Mdhilla 1 plant to a double absorption system with heat recovery
- The transition from heavy fuel to natural gas
- The creation of a seawater desalination unit using reverse osmosis
Additional Projects
"The GCT also plans to develop the phosphogypsum storage area with a polyethylene insulation layer, gas washing systems for sulfuric acid and triple superphosphate production units, as well as the planting of a green belt around the group's factories," he added.
Ongoing Projects
According to the same source, among the projects that were put out to tender last July is the environmental rehabilitation project of the sulfuric acid unit by integrating double absorption technology, with a total cost of 82 million dinars, aiming to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions, save energy, and decrease sulfur consumption.
Social Responsibility
These initiatives are part of the Tunisian Chemical Group's social responsibility, which also includes:
- The rehabilitation of six primary schools in Mdhilla
- The development of the municipal stadium
- Increased subsidies for sports associations in El Mdhilla and Borj Akerma
- The acquisition of a scanner and X-ray machine for the local hospital in El Mdhilla
