Tunisia’s Coastal Agency Announces Umbrella‑Rental Rates and Calls for Blue‑Economy Investment
Tunis, 20 February 2026 – The Agency for the Protection and Development of the Coastline (APAL) has clarified the annual rent for leasing a beach parasol on Tunisian shores.
| Item | Rate (per year) |
|---|---|
| Single parasol | 50 – 100 TND |
| Block of 20 parasols | 50 TND per parasol (i.e., 1 000 TND for the whole block) |
“The exploitation of beaches is strictly governed by a licensing system, and the agency closely monitors any unauthorized or anarchic activity,” said Mohamed Ali Briki, GIS and remote‑sensing specialist at APAL.
Deadline for Investors
During his interview on Radio National on Friday, 20 February 2026, Briki invited interested investors to submit their applications by 31 March 2026 to secure parasol‑rental spots for the upcoming summer season.
Blue‑Economy Development: A National Priority
Beyond parasol rentals, Briki highlighted the strategic importance of expanding Tunisia’s blue‑economy sector:
- 7.6 million Tunisians live along the coast, with most major urban centers situated on the shoreline.
- 90 % of industrial activity is located in coastal zones.
- Marine‑related sectors contribute 15.9 % of GDP and employ 12.7 % of the active workforce.
- 98 % of Tunisia’s foreign trade depends on the sea.
He stressed that a robust, sustainable coastal economy is essential for national growth and urged private capital to participate in this transformation.
APAL’s Communication Goals
The agency’s announcement aims to:
- Clarify the regulatory framework for beach‑site rentals.
- Increase transparency in the allocation of parasol locations.
- Encourage responsible investment that supports the long‑term, sustainable development of the coastline.
“These measures fit within a broader strategy to unlock the economic potential of Tunisia’s beaches while ensuring their protection and organized use,” Briki concluded.
