Tunisia to Introduce Biometric ID Card, A Major Step in Modernizing National Identification System

The Tunisian authorities are set to take a decisive step in modernizing the national identification system with the introduction of the biometric ID card. According to Abdelkrim Saoud, the person in charge of the project, the adoption of the law governing this project was immediately followed by the preparation of implementation decrees and regulatory texts related to this new card. These texts define, in particular, its model, technical specifications, as well as the security and data protection standards associated with it.

This card, which represents a significant advance in the country's official identification system, aims to offer citizens a more modern and secure identity document. "The main objective is to strengthen the protection of personal data while simplifying administrative procedures. Thanks to cutting-edge technologies, it will reduce the risk of counterfeiting, guarantee the authenticity of information, and streamline interactions with public and private administrations," he specified in a statement to the National Radio.

Indeed, the biometric card is part of a broader vision of digital transformation of the Tunisian state, in line with international standards. It is also expected to contribute to strengthening citizens' trust in institutions, improving the quality of administrative services, and bringing Tunisia closer to global best practices in e-governance.

"The official launch is expected soon. The exact date of entry into force will be announced after the completion of the necessary legal and logistical preparations, including technical infrastructure and training of agents," he added.

The official also emphasizes the importance of ensuring a smooth transition, so that citizens can fully benefit from the advantages offered by this new identification tool.
