The Mufti of the Tunisian Republic Announces the Start of Ramadan

Tunis, 20 February 2026 – The Mufti of the Tunisian Republic, Hichem ben Mahmoud, announced on Tuesday that the crescent marking the beginning of the month of Ramadan was not observed in the country. Consequently, Thursday, 19 February 2026 will officially be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in Tunisia.

This announcement is based on the traditional lunar observation that determines the start of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and solidarity for Muslims. The Mufti called on believers to prepare themselves spiritually and to respect the official timetable for the commencement of the fast.

He also emphasized that the determination of Ramadan’s first day relies on a rigorous observation that conforms to Islamic standards.
