President of the National Butchers’ Chamber Warns of Continuous Rise in Red‑Meat Prices in Tunisia
Ahmed El Omri, the head of the National Chamber of Butchers, has sounded the alarm over the ongoing increase in red‑meat prices across Tunisia.
“This surge is mainly due to the decline of the national livestock herd, which creates an insufficient supply on the market and a sharp rise in red‑meat prices,” he told Diwan FM. He added that the price of lamb meat has now reached 60 dinars per kilogram.
El Omri also highlighted that the most sought‑after meat at the moment is goat meat, priced at 52 dinars per kilogram.
He described the situation as a “structural crisis” and called on the supervisory authorities to act swiftly to support the sector and preserve the supply chain. According to El Omri, an effective regulatory framework is essential to meet the growing demand while stabilising prices for consumers.
This warning comes as Tunisia’s red‑meat market faces mounting pressure, exacerbated by a shrinking livestock herd and volatile production costs.
