Medusa Submarine Cable to Become Operational in February 2026

The General Director of Communication Technologies, Mehreziya Ouni, announced that the Medusa submarine cable will be operational starting from February 2026, offering a capacity of 24 terabits per second and increasing the current bandwidth for the entire country by 8 to 10 times. During her appearance on National Radio on Monday, November 10, 2025, Ms. Ouni specified that Tunisia is the first country in North Africa to be connected to this cable, which spans approximately 1,000 km from Marseille to Bizerte. The cable is currently in the final testing phase, the last step before its commercial deployment. According to the Director, the project will bring considerable comfort to Tunisian Internet users, improve connection speeds, reduce network congestion, and promote the development of advanced digital services. From an economic perspective, the cable is considered a major driver for investment, particularly in the information technology and artificial intelligence sectors. Ms. Ouni also assured that the installation of the cable has no environmental impact on the sea, in accordance with the conclusions of the Ministry of Environment. It is worth noting that the Medusa submarine cable is a network of fiber optic lines designed to transport international communications, connecting Southern European countries to North African countries over a total distance of approximately 8,700 km.
