China Offers to Share Expertise with Tunisia to Support Chemical Industry Development

Wan Li, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Tunisia, announced today that China is ready to share its expertise with the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) to support the development of the chemical industry in Tunisia.

Environmental Evaluation and Modernization

In an interview with the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) agency, the ambassador indicated that a technical team from a Chinese company, currently in charge of building a phosphate plant in a neighboring governorate of Gabès, was dispatched this week to assess the environmental situation in the region. "The Tunisian side has requested China's assistance in modernizing the GCT's production units in Gabès, treating gas emissions, and reducing pollution," Wan Li specified, recalling his previous meeting with the Minister of Equipment and Housing, Salah Zouari.

Balancing Industrial Development and Environmental Protection

The ambassador emphasized that the chemical industry is inherently risky and that many countries have faced pollution accidents throughout history. "As a major industrial power, China has learned important lessons in environmental protection. Preserving a healthy environment is essential for the well-being of populations. Using advanced technologies and strictly applying production standards allows for a balance between industrial development and ecological protection," he added.

China's Commitment to Reducing Carbon Emissions

Wan Li recalled that China committed in 2020 to reducing its peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. Between 2021 and 2024, energy consumption per unit of GDP decreased by 11.6%. The Chinese experience shows that a balance between economic development and environmental protection is possible, and that the development of the chemical industry must be accompanied by strict pollution management. "By 2035, China plans to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 7-10% compared to peak levels. We have also built the world's largest and fastest renewable energy system, as well as complete industrial chains in the field of new energies," the ambassador concluded.

Strengthening Cooperation between Tunisia and China

Finally, Wan Li praised the sustained pace of cooperation between Tunisia and China, as well as the implementation of the strategic partnership commitments between the two countries in several areas, including the chemical industry.
