Medusa Submarine Cable to Enhance Digital Connectivity between Europe and Africa

The Medusa submarine cable, currently being deployed, will connect the city of Marseille in France to Bizerte in Tunisia, thereby strengthening digital connectivity between the two shores of the Mediterranean. Led by Orange and co-financed by the European Union, this project marks a significant milestone in the development of digital infrastructure between Europe and Africa.

Key Features of the Project

  • The Marseille-Bizerte segment, spanning 1,050 kilometers, constitutes the first European landing of the Medusa system, a network of submarine cables designed to meet the growing demand for bandwidth in the region.
  • This section benefits from financial support from the Mechanism for Interconnection in Europe (MIE) as part of the European Global Gateway strategy, aiming to strengthen trans-Mediterranean connectivity and reduce the digital divide.

Enhanced Connectivity and Resilience

According to a statement released by the operator, this link makes Bizerte an essential part of regional connectivity, ensuring direct and secure access to major European hubs (Paris, London, Frankfurt) as well as other global destinations. This infrastructure will contribute to improving network resilience and supporting the development of digital technology in the region.

Quote from Orange CEO

"The landing of the Medusa cable illustrates Orange's key role in the connectivity of the Mediterranean basin, guaranteeing digital resilience and support for socio-economic development," said Michael Trabbia, CEO of Orange Wholesale.

Environmentally Responsible Installation

The installation of the cable, carried out by Elettra Tlc and the cable-laying vessel Sophie Germain from Orange Marine, was conducted in accordance with regional environmental objectives, including the preservation of marine ecosystems.

Consolidating Tunisia's Position in Regional Digital Transition

With this new installation, Bizerte joins the circle of major digital hubs in the Mediterranean, consolidating Tunisia's position as an indispensable player in the regional digital transition.
