The Tunisian Automotive Market is Controlled by Only Ten Families, Claims Dhiaa Khalafallah

Dhiaa Khalafallah, a member of the organization ALERT, asserts that the Tunisian automotive market is controlled by only ten families. These families exert control over all stages of the sector, from supply to distribution, including insurance, leasing, and automotive credit.

A Highly Restricted Market

According to Dhiaa Khalafallah, the functioning of the Tunisian car market remains highly centralized, both before and after the revolution. "The distribution and financing networks of vehicles are dominated by this small group, preventing real competition and limiting citizens' access to vehicles at reasonable prices," he stated in a declaration to the National Radio on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

Khalafallah added that the impact of this control is directly felt by consumers. In some cases, used cars are sold at higher prices than new vehicles. "It's incredible, but it's the reality of the market today," emphasizes Dhiaa Khalafallah, while also noting that the current system contributes to creating an artificially tight market, where consumption and investment mechanisms remain captive.

A Concentration of Power

In the same context, he added that these ten families have ties in several key sectors: insurance, banking, and leasing. They manage nearly 73% of the vehicle market, 72% of the insurance market, and 78% of the leasing market, according to data relayed by ALERT. This economic lock limits the possibilities for the average citizen to enter the market, while generating considerable profits for a minority.

It is worth noting that the organization ALERT published a detailed study on its Facebook page, revealing these dynamics. The subject was also discussed in recent days during a debate at the Assembly of People's Representatives, highlighting the importance of reforms for a more transparent and accessible market.

Market Trends and Statistics

According to the latest statistics, the Tunisian automotive market recorded strong growth during the first ten months of 2025, with 77,112 vehicles sold, compared to 64,842 during the same period in 2024. This represents significant economic activity, but it is concentrated in the hands of a few. "The control exercised by this cartel explains the high prices of vehicles in Tunisia to a large extent," he emphasized, while highlighting the need for a more just and open system. According to him, the current mechanisms favor a minority and hinder consumption, while the market could benefit the entire population if the barriers were lifted.
