Tunisian Agriculture and Food Security Commission President Warns of Illicit Red Meat Imports
Hassan Jarboui, President of the Agriculture and Food Security Commission at the Assembly of Representatives of the People (ARP), has sounded the alarm on the presence of illicit red meat on Tunisian markets, smuggled in from Algeria through contraband networks.
Speaking on Diwan Fm on Thursday evening, the deputy revealed that these products, including red meat and mutton of Romanian origin, are being sold in limited quantities by networks involving Tunisian and Algerian nationals, without the oversight of competent authorities.
Hassan Jarboui called for the strict application of the law against smugglers and the holding of administrative officials accountable for failing to fulfill their control obligations.
He also attributed the absence of sufficient imports of meat and mutton by the Ministry of Commerce to regulate the market before Eid Al-Adha to the opening of the door to these illicit practices.
The deputy finally advocated for an investigation into the situation of the red meat market, which he describes as worrying, and called for exceptional measures to address this crisis.
