Competition Council Launches Investigation into Olive Oil Sector

The Competition Council announced, in a statement released on October 16, 2025, the opening of judicial investigations following serious suspicions of anti-competitive practices in the olive oil sector. This decision comes after the National Chamber of Oil Mill Owners issued a statement setting a reference price for olive pressing at 250 millimes per kilogram for the 2025-2026 agricultural season. The Council specified that it had activated the self-referral mechanism, in accordance with Article 15 of Law No. 36 of 2015 on the reorganization of competition and prices. This initiative is part of its role in preserving public economic order, maintaining market balance, and protecting consumers. Based on a report from the General Reporter, the Council found indications suggesting the existence of concerted practices contrary to Article 5 of the Competition Law. Consequently, it decided to take up the case and open the necessary investigations to determine the truth of these practices and, if necessary, take appropriate legal action.
