Tunisia stands out on the international scene for its pasta consumption, becoming the second-largest consumer globally, according to the International Pasta Organisation (IPO). The IPO's 2023-2024 annual report indicates that each Tunisian consumes an average of 17 kg of pasta per year, compared to 23.2 kg in Italy, which ranks first globally.
This position highlights the cultural and nutritional importance of "Makrouna" (a type of pasta) in the Tunisian diet. As an affordable and easy-to-prepare food, it occupies a central place in family meals and local restaurants.
The IPO also notes that global pasta consumption continues to grow, driven by the popularity of this simple, nutritious, and adaptable product to different culinary styles.
