Tunisia Ranks 20th Globally in Energy Efficiency

Tunisia has ranked 20th out of 140 countries in terms of energy efficiency, according to the World Bank's 2025 report on sustainable energy indicators. On the African continent, it occupies the second position behind Nigeria and ranks 62nd globally in the energy transition index evaluated by the Economic Forum across 115 countries.

These results are attributed to the work of the National Agency for Energy Management, created 40 years ago. This public institution, with a non-administrative and non-commercial character, has contributed to the development of laws aimed at reducing carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, while aligning Tunisia with international standards.

Tunisia has set ambitious goals: to reduce its carbon index by 62% by 2035 and produce 35% of its electricity from renewable energies by 2030, and 50% by 2035.

According to Nacef Bakari, Director General of the National Agency for Energy Management, the country is making regular progress in calculating and reducing its national contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. This commitment has been strengthened, with a reduction in emissions now planned to be 62% by 2035, compared to the initial 45% target for 2030.

These performances are based on the development of renewable energies and the improvement of energy efficiency, as 70% of Tunisia's greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy sector. The use of alternative energies is thus an essential lever for achieving these objectives.
