French Tourists' Travel Reservations Plummet in April 2026 Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty and Economic Pressures

According to the monthly barometer published by Orchestra for L'Écho Touristique, French tourists' travel reservations have experienced a significant decline in April 2026, amidst geopolitical uncertainties and economic pressures.

The data shows a 12.6% drop in travel agency activity compared to the same period last year, confirming a general trend of market slowdown.

In this context, French tourists are increasingly opting for nearby destinations with controlled costs, with notable stability for metropolitan France (-0.7%) and Spain (-1.7%), considered "refuge destinations."

On the other hand, several Mediterranean and long-haul destinations are experiencing more pronounced declines. Greece and Italy are reporting double-digit declines, while the most affected destinations remain Egypt (-nearly 50%), Turkey (-40%), and the United States (-37%), illustrating a significant shift in French tourists' travel choices.

Tunisia stands out as one of the most resilient destinations in the Mediterranean basin, with a 10% decline in French reservations, a lower rate than several competing markets.

In contrast, Morocco is experiencing a more significant decline, with an estimated 18.2% drop in French reservations, placing the North African country in a more fragile position in the short term, despite its traditionally strong position on the French market.

According to the barometer data, Tunisia ranks among the most resistant regional destinations, just behind Spain, confirming its relative ability to absorb the slowdown in the European market.

Beyond individual destination performances, the April trends reveal a recomposition of tourist behaviors. French tourists are increasingly favoring nearby, accessible, and less expensive destinations, in a context of rising prices and economic uncertainties.

This evolution is also reflected in the pressure on travel budgets, with average baskets declining for most destinations, according to the barometer data. Shorter stays and financial arbitrage are becoming key factors in the market.

In this evolving landscape, Albania stands out as one of the few destinations experiencing growth, confirming its emerging position on the European market.

April 2026 thus confirms an evolving hierarchy on the French travel market. While traditional destinations in the Maghreb and Mediterranean basin are experiencing a slowdown, Tunisia is managing to limit its decline and position itself more favorably than several direct competitors, including Morocco.
