Tunisia Reaffirms its Categorical Refusal of "Disguised Installation" of Irregular Migrants
Tunisia has reaffirmed its categorical refusal of the "disguised installation" of irregular migrants and condemned any irresponsible political or media instrumentalization of the suffering of victims of this phenomenon.
In a statement published on Wednesday by the Tunisian mission participating in the 76th session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Program, held in Geneva from October 6 to 10, Tunisia called on all donors to redouble their efforts to facilitate the voluntary return of refugees to their country and accelerate the procedures for resettlement in developed countries with the economic capacity and social fabric to easily accommodate them.
Key Points
- Tunisia insisted on the need to defuse crises and wars and find a peaceful solution to conflicts around the world, recalling the country's efforts in this area on the occasion of its membership in the African Union's Peace and Security Council for the period 2022-2024 and the United Nations Security Council for the period 2020-2021.
- The statement also emphasized the need to consecrate the principle of solidarity between states and the sharing of burdens in order to alleviate suffering and ensure international aid and protection for refugees, particularly by identifying effective and sustainable solutions to provide the necessary means and sufficient resources for this purpose.
- Tunisia highlighted the importance of establishing clear mechanisms to alleviate pressure on host countries and preserve the dignity of refugees, especially since the vast majority of these countries face major and urgent economic and social challenges.
Commitment to Refugee Protection
The statement recalled Tunisia's commitment to the universal principles of refugee protection and international treaties and conventions related to the protection of human rights and the provisions of international humanitarian law. Tunisia expressed its willingness to offer favorable conditions for the temporary reception of refugees, within the framework of a comprehensive approach to the phenomenon of asylum and the management of its repercussions by addressing its root causes.
Support for the Palestinian People
Tunisia also reiterated its position in favor of a ceasefire in the occupied Palestinian territories, the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid, and the lifting of the blockade imposed on the Palestinian people. Finally, Tunisia called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibility through rapid intervention to put an end to the genocide.
