Tunisian Exporters to the European Union Must Comply with New Environmental Standards by 2026

Tunisian companies exporting to the European Union will be required to comply with new environmental standards, including a carbon emissions cap, also known as a carbon footprint, in order to maintain their trade with European markets starting from 2026.

This announcement was made on the occasion of the International Forum organized for World Accounting Day, under the theme "The Accountant Facing Environmental and Social Challenges". The forum aims to present the new regulations and inform professionals about the upcoming obligations.

According to Nader Haj Faraj, President of the National Council of the Order of Chartered Accountants of Tunisia, the forum also aims to highlight the central role of accountants in considering environmental and social issues. The Order currently has 2,500 chartered accountants spread across the Tunisian territory.

For her part, Amal Jerad, Environmental and Climate Change Advisor, specified that the carbon footprint will be imposed from 2026 on steel and electrical products intended for export to Europe.

Meanwhile, Samir Majoul, President of the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade, and Handicrafts (UTICA), proposed the creation of a National Industrial Decarbonization Observatory, as part of a partnership between the Union and the government, to monitor and facilitate the implementation of these new standards.

This measure is part of a global effort to reduce the environmental impact of Tunisian exports and align the country with European sustainability standards.
