Opening Session

During the opening session, co-chaired by Kenyan Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs Édouard Bizimana, and COMESA Secretary General Chileshe Kapwepwe, Minister Nafti took the floor to recall that Tunisia joined this regional space convinced of the importance of economic and commercial integration in Africa, and persuaded of the need to contribute to establishing the foundations of peace and security in this region of Africa. He considered these elements as essential factors for the progress and development of the East and Southern African Common Market, as well as for opening up new perspectives for it.

Key Points

The Minister also highlighted the importance of existing coordination between COMESA, the United Nations (celebrating its 80th anniversary), and the African Union, in order to prevent crises and manage them effectively through dialogue and diplomatic mediation. He affirmed that COMESA is called upon to become a vast space for economic integration and cooperation among its members in this part of Africa, thanks to ambitious programs combining dimensions of peace, security, and inclusive economic and social development.

Conclusion

Minister Nafti's participation in the COMESA Summit aims to strengthen Tunisia's position within the regional organization and promote economic cooperation and integration among member states. The meeting provides an opportunity for Tunisian officials to engage with their counterparts from other COMESA member states and discuss ways to enhance regional trade, investment, and economic development.
