Tunisia's Foreign Minister Receives Professor Slim Laghmani for International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea Candidacy

Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti Meets with Professor Slim Laghmani

On Tuesday, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti received Professor Slim Laghmani, a candidate from Tunisia for the position of judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026-2035 mandate, according to a statement from the Ministry.

This meeting allowed for an evaluation of the progress of the diplomatic campaign led by Tunisia to mobilize support from member states of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in preparation for the elections scheduled for June 2026 in New York, during the meeting of states parties to the Convention.

According to the Ministry, the discussions focused on the next steps of this campaign in the Arab, African, Mediterranean, and UN spaces to strengthen the chances of success for the Tunisian candidacy.

Minister Nafti emphasized the importance given by Tunisian diplomacy to promoting national expertise within international and regional organizations, as well as to Tunisia's visibility on the multilateral stage.

In April, Professor Slim Laghmani held several meetings in New York with permanent representatives to the United Nations, including those from Malaysia and Chile, as part of his electoral campaign.

Born in 1957 in Tunis, Slim Laghmani is an emeritus professor of public law and a specialist in constitutional law and international law. He is also the founder of the Laboratory of Research in International Law and Maghreb-Europe Relations and an expert in maritime law.

Based in Hamburg since 1996, the ITLOS is the judicial organ responsible for interpreting and applying the UNCLOS.
