Restoration Work on Ghar El Melh Port's Historic Wall Officially Launched

The restoration work on the historic wall of Ghar El Melh port, located in the governorate of Bizerte, was officially launched on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, as announced by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. This initiative is part of the national strategy for the preservation and enhancement of Tunisia's archaeological and historical heritage.

Project Overview

The project is being carried out under the supervision of the National Heritage Institute (INP), which is responsible for the conservation and restoration of ancient sites and monuments threatened by time or climatic conditions.

Historical Significance of the Wall

The wall of the old port of Ghar El Melh, also known as the defensive wall of the ancient port, was once a strategic fortification that protected both the port and the old naval arsenal (Dar Essinaa). According to the INP's archives, its construction dates back to the first half of the 17th century, a period corresponding to the founding of the city of Ghar El Melh, which was then considered an important military and commercial port under the Ottoman regency.

Restoration Goals

This restoration operation aims to preserve the architectural integrity of the site, slow down its degradation, and enhance the historical heritage of the region, which is one of the most emblematic coastal sites in northern Tunisia.

Commitment to Heritage Preservation

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs reaffirmed, on this occasion, its commitment to safeguarding historical monuments and strengthening restoration actions in various regions of the country, with the aim of promoting cultural tourism and sustainable local development.
