National Oil Production Sees 9% Decline
According to the latest data published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines, national oil production reached 0.86 million tons of oil equivalent (toe) by the end of August 2025, recording a 9% decrease compared to the same period of the previous year (0.94 million toe).
Decline in Liquid Gas Production
The production of liquid gas, including that from the Gabès plant, also experienced a 10% decline, standing at 86,000 tons of oil equivalent, compared to 95,000 tons during the same period in 2024.
Ongoing Drilling Operations
The Observatory specified that drilling operations are ongoing at several sites: an exploration well was initiated in August 2025 under the Sidi Marzouk permit, while two development wells were drilled under the Chergui permit in January and March 2025, respectively.
Challenges Facing the Hydrocarbon Sector
The exploration and production sector of hydrocarbons continues to face numerous structural challenges, including:
- Volatility of global oil prices
- Repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic
- The war in Ukraine
- Natural decline in production in several mature fields
Current State of Exploration and Production
As of the end of August 2025, Tunisia has:
- 15 active research and exploration permits
- 56 exploitation concessions granted by the State, with 44 currently in production.
