Inflation Rate Slightly Decreases in September 2025

The inflation rate has slightly decreased in September 2025, standing at 5% compared to 5.2% the previous month, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) in a note published on Sunday and dedicated to the "Consumer Price Index - September 2025". This decrease is mainly explained by the slowdown in price increases in several sectors, the INS specifies.

Food Prices

Food products have recorded a change of 5.7% in September 2025, compared to 5.9% in August. The prices of leisure and culture have decreased more significantly, from 5.4% to 4.6%. The services of restaurants, cafes, and hotels have also slowed down, with an increase of 10.1% compared to 10.6% the previous month, while transport services have progressed by only 3.1%, after 3.6% in August.

Annual Change

On an annual basis, food prices have increased by 5.7%, due in particular to the rise in prices of fresh vegetables (+21.1%), lamb meat (+20.2%), fresh fish (+10.3%), and fresh fruits (+9.9%). In contrast, the prices of food oils have fallen by 24.3%. Over one year, the prices of manufactured products have increased by 4.9%, under the effect of the rise in prices of clothing and footwear products (+9%) and everyday household maintenance products (+4.9%). In the services sector, prices have progressed by 4.5% over one year, due to the increase in prices of restaurant, cafe, and hotel services (+10.1%).

Underlying Inflation Rate

In September 2025, the underlying inflation rate (excluding food and energy) decreased to 5.2%, after 5.4% in August. Regarding the prices of free products (not framed), they have increased by 6% over one year, compared to an increase of 1.6% for framed products. Free food products have recorded an increase of 6.5%, compared to 0.2% for food products with framed prices.

Contribution to Inflation

According to the INS, the "Manufactured Products" group and the "Services" group are the sectors that have made the strongest contribution to overall inflation, respectively 1.9% and 1.5%. By regime, the "Non-food free" group and the "Food free" group are those that have contributed the most to inflation, with respectively 3% and 1.6%.

Increase of 0.6% in Consumer Prices

The consumer price index recorded an increase of 0.6% in September 2025 compared to August 2025. This increase is mainly attributed to the rise in food prices (+1.3%) and the group of education services (+3.7%). On a monthly basis, food prices have progressed by 1.3%, due to the increase in prices of poultry (+5.6%), eggs (+4.2%), fresh vegetables (+2.6%), and beef (+1.4%). In contrast, the price of lamb meat has slightly decreased by 0.1%. Education products and services have recorded an increase of 3.7%, mainly due to the increase in prices of private secondary education (+5%), pre-elementary and primary education (+4.7%), school support courses (+3.2%), and school supplies (+3%). The prices of the "Leisure and Culture" group have progressed by 0.7%, under the effect of the increase in prices of newspapers, magazines, and cultural books (+1.3%).
