Credit Growth in the Economy
The outstanding credit to the economy reached 118.6 billion dinars (MD) in 2024, recording the same growth rate as in 2023, at 2.8%, according to the Annual Report on Banking Supervision for the 2024 fiscal year, published on Saturday by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).
Breakdown of Credit Growth by Beneficiary Category
The analysis of credit growth by beneficiary category reveals a significant increase in the outstanding credit granted to public enterprises, rising from 8.3% in 2023 to 9.5% in 2024. In contrast, the growth of credit to private enterprises remained stable at 1.5%, similar to 2023.
Sectoral Distribution of Credit to Professionals
The sectoral distribution of credit to professionals shows an increase in the share of credit granted to the services and agriculture sectors, at the expense of the industrial sector.
Household Debt
As for individuals, their debt to the banking sector totaled 29,407 MD in 2024, compared to 28,754 MD in 2023, representing a 2.3% increase (compared to 3.1% in 2023 and 4.8% in 2022). This slowdown is mainly due to the slowing down of housing credits, with a growth rate limited to 0.8% in 2024.
Credit to Individuals as a Percentage of Total Credit
Moreover, the share of credit to individuals in the total credit to the economy has stabilized over the past three years, reaching 24.8% at the end of 2024. Their weight in GDP decreased from 19.3% in 2023 to 18.5% in 2024.
