The banking sector activity in Tunisia remains largely concentrated on resident banks, which account for 93% of total assets, 95% of credits, and 97% of deposits, according to the 14th edition of the annual report on banking supervision for the 2024 fiscal year, published on Saturday, November 8, 2025, by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

Within resident banks, concentration ratios show a high level:

  • The top four banks control nearly half of the banking activity
  • The top eight banks hold more than three-quarters of the activity

Market Share of Different Types of Banks

The contribution of public banks remains the most significant, with a market share of:

  • 35.7% in terms of assets
  • 37.9% in terms of credits
  • 28.4% in terms of deposits

Tunisian private capital banks hold:

  • 32.6% of total assets
  • 30.3% of credits
  • 35.5% of deposits

Foreign capital banks hold:

  • 28.5% of assets
  • 28.9% of credits
  • 33.1% of deposits

Mixed banks have more modest market shares:

  • 3.2% of assets
