Medical Breakthrough in Tunisia
The medical team from the cardiology department at Charles Nicolle Hospital successfully performed, on Monday, December 8, the first procedure in Tunisia to treat coronary artery calcifications using intracoronary shockwave technology. The 58-year-old patient, who had a severely narrowed and calcified coronary artery, underwent an innovative treatment consisting of fragmenting the calcifications using an intracoronary lithotripsy balloon, followed by the placement of a drug-eluting stent to restore normal blood flow. The operation was led by Professor Habib Ben Ahmed and the catheterization team, under the supervision of Professor Leïla Bezdah and in coordination with Professor Aymen Abbassi from the clinical pharmacy department. This success demonstrates Tunisia's advancements in interventional cardiology and the ability of national professionals to master the most modern techniques for treating complex cardiac pathologies. ###
