Tunisia Deploys New Technology to Accelerate Bacterial Diagnosis

Modernization of Medical Analysis Laboratories

In an effort to modernize medical analysis laboratories, the Ministry of Health has introduced cutting-edge technology, known as MALDI-TOF. This innovation enables the identification of the type of bacteria or fungi in just a few minutes, instead of several hours or days.

Five hospitals have already been equipped with this technology:

  • La Rabta Hospital
  • Charles Nicolle Hospital
  • Farhat Hached Hospital in Sousse
  • Habib Bourguiba Hospital in Sfax
  • The tuberculosis reference laboratory in Ariana

This technique provides doctors with a precise diagnosis, allowing them to choose the appropriate treatment. It also helps to reduce the uncontrolled use of antibiotics and combat bacterial resistance to medication.
