Former Mufti of the Republic, Hamda Saïed, Passes Away at 85
The Diwan of Ifta announced on Thursday at dawn the passing of former Mufti of the Republic, Hamda Saïed, at the age of 85.
Early Life and Education
Born on June 10, 1940, in Beni Khiar, in the governorate of Nabeul, the late Hamda Saïed left a mark on the Tunisian religious and academic scene through his career at the University of Zitouna. He obtained his diploma of aptitude in 1959, a "tahsîl" diploma in 1962, and a license in Sharia and foundations of religion in 1966.
Academic Achievements
In 1987, he defended a doctoral thesis in Islamic law and the objectives of Sharia, entitled "The contradiction between legal evidence and the methods of scholars in their reconciliation." Two years later, in 1989, he was recruited as a university professor in jurisprudence, foundations of law, and magistracy, in both theoretical and practical dimensions.
Post-Revolution Responsibilities
After the 2011 revolution, Hamda Saïed also took on new responsibilities, including serving as an imam preacher at the Souk Mosque in Beni Khiar and as president of the Regional Quranic Association of Nabeul.
Tribute from the Mufti of the Republic
The Mufti of the Republic, Hichem Ben Mahmoud, paid tribute to his predecessor, recalling that he was "one of the great figures of Zitouna, a scholar and an imam who dedicated his life to the service of religion and the homeland."
