China and Tunisia Work Towards Economic Partnership Agreement

The Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Tunisia, Wan Li, announced on Friday that Beijing and Tunis are actively working towards concluding an economic partnership agreement for mutual development. The agreement aims to establish a zero-tariff regime on products exchanged between the two countries, facilitating bilateral trade.

In an interview with the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) agency, the Chinese diplomat expressed hope that negotiations would soon be successful, allowing more high-quality Tunisian products to access the Chinese market easily. This measure, he specified, would contribute to taking Sino-Tunisian trade to a higher level.

"The volume of trade between China and Tunisia is already considerable, particularly Tunisian exports to China," Wan Li emphasized, recalling that Beijing is working to ensure balanced development between the two countries and to resolve the technical difficulties faced by Tunisian agricultural exports.

According to him, the relevant authorities of both countries are continuing their discussions in this regard, ensuring that Tunisian priorities are integrated.

The Ambassador also recalled that Chinese President Xi Jinping announced in June the total exemption of customs duties on 100% of taxable products from all African countries with diplomatic relations with China, including Tunisia. This initiative, part of the economic partnership for mutual development, aims to further open up the Chinese market and offer new growth opportunities to African economies.

According to official data, Tunisian imports from China increased by 42.7% during the first five months of 2025, representing 14% of Tunisia's total imports as of the end of May. The total volume of trade between the two countries reached 9.2 billion dinars in 2024, compared to 8.6 billion dinars in 2023, an increase of 8%.
