Minister of Health Announces Completion of Technical and Financial Studies for Kairouan Medical City

The Minister of Health, Mustapha Ferjani, announced on Wednesday that the technical and financial studies for the creation of the "Les Aghlabides" Medical City in Kairouan will be completed in the coming weeks. This large-scale project, with an initial estimated cost of 3 billion dinars, is expected to generate around 200,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to the minister.

Announcement Made During Budget Committee Hearing

This announcement was made during a hearing session held by the Finance and Budget Committee at the Assembly, dedicated to examining two credit agreement projects between Tunisia and the French Development Agency (AFD), concerning the financing of several initiatives in the health sector.

Project Overview

Ferjani recalled that the "Les Aghlabides" Medical City will be implemented under a protocol agreement signed in February between Tunisia and China. The project aims to transform Kairouan and its surroundings into a true integrated hub of health and economy, promoting regional development and attracting foreign investment in the central regions.

Medical City Infrastructure

The medical city will be built on a 553-hectare state-owned land in the Menzel M'hiri delegation and will include:

  • 14 hospital poles
  • A multidisciplinary military clinic
  • Several private medical centers
  • A university complex comprising a military medical academy, a higher institute of medical sciences, a national school of biomedical engineering, a simulation center, and an air medical evacuation unit

Additional Facilities

The project also includes:

  • A 20-hectare industrial space dedicated to health technologies
  • A tourist, cultural, recreational, and sports area
  • A 50-hectare residential area with 100 high-end villas and 1,000 apartments
  • A 42-hectare public services space with schools, banks, security, and administrative facilities

Economic and Social Impact

This flagship project illustrates the Tunisian authorities' desire to make Kairouan a reference medical and university center, while stimulating investment and employment in a region that has long been marginalized.
