Major Medical Breakthrough at Charles Nicolle Hospital
The Charles Nicolle Hospital has achieved a significant medical breakthrough by performing its first robotic hysterectomy. The operation was successfully carried out at the hospital's National Center for Robotic Surgery, under the supervision of Dr. Nabil Mathlouthi, head of the gynecology-obstetrics department, in collaboration with Dr. Anis Fkih, and with the participation of Dr. Anis Fadhlaoui and Dr. Marouan Brahem.
According to the Ministry of Health, this success marks an important milestone in the development of robotic surgery in Tunisia, offering patients more precise and less invasive interventions.
Innovative Technique for Enhanced Safety and Comfort
In a statement given to Express FM on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, Dr. Anis Fkih, head of the gynecology-obstetrics department at a university hospital in Switzerland, highlighted the benefits of this technology. "Robotic surgery significantly facilitates the operation, reducing hand tremors and improving the surgeon's vision. Additionally, the incision is very small, measuring approximately 1 cm," he explained.
Dr. Fkih also pointed out that this technique reduces bleeding and post-operative pain, while accelerating patient recovery. He added that work is underway to integrate artificial intelligence to support the surgeon during the operation, helping them make decisions and reduce fatigue. This innovation would enable a greater number of interventions to be performed with increased efficiency and safety.
Comprehensive Training for Optimal Teamwork
On another note, Dr. Fkih emphasized the importance of training and supervision for the entire medical team. "Optimal preparation for each intervention is essential to ensure the safety and success of operations," he stated. The goal is to generalize the use of this technology to allow a maximum number of patients to benefit from the advantages of robotic surgery.
He added that this first successful intervention paves the way for a new era in gynecological surgery in Tunisia, combining innovation, precision, and safety for patients and the medical community.
