United Nations Day: Tunisia Celebrates 80 Years of UN Founding

Tunisia, like other countries around the world, is celebrating the "United Nations Day" on October 24, 2025, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Organization. This annual commemoration provides an opportunity to evoke the fundamental principles and values on which the Organization was founded, as well as the noble objectives for which it was created, translating the aspirations of peoples to a more humane, just, and solidarity-based international order, founded on a Charter advocating for lasting peace, universal justice, and equitable development.

Reaffirming Tunisia's Commitment to the UN

It is also an occasion to reaffirm Tunisia's constant and principled commitment to contributing to the building of a more just and balanced international order, based on the respect of cooperation and solidarity principles between peoples, in response to the aspirations of present and future generations to a world of peace, security, and stability.

Ceremony at the International Diplomatic Academy of Tunis

On this occasion, Mohamed Ali Nafti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, presided over a ceremony organized at the headquarters of the International Diplomatic Academy of Tunis, in the presence of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tunisia, the Heads of Diplomatic Missions, and representatives of UN and international agencies accredited in Tunisia, as well as high-ranking officials.

Partnership between Tunisia and the UN

He emphasized that the holding of this ceremony, as well as Tunisia's participation in the Summit of the Future and the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, is part of the historical and privileged partnership that unites Tunisia with the United Nations system. A partnership based on mutual trust and constructive cooperation, in the service of the objectives of sustainable development and the strengthening of international peace and security.

Year of Multilateral Action

In this context, he recalled that the President of the Tunisian Republic, Kaïs Saïed, decided to place the year 2025 under the theme: "Year of strengthening multilateral action and cooperation with the United Nations Organization." To this end, several events were organized at the International Diplomatic Academy of Tunis, in coordination with the specialized UN agencies, on themes consistent with the Summit of the Future 2024, addressing issues of security, development, science, technology, and culture.

Tunisia's Position on International Issues

The minister reaffirmed that Tunisia, which joined the United Nations upon its independence, has distinguished itself by its principled positions, its attachment to international law, and its clear and responsible vision of a world order based on respect for state sovereignty and international legitimacy. It continues to make its free and responsible voice heard on the international scene, in favor of just causes, development for all, and the promotion of shared responsibility, solidarity, and cooperation between peoples.

Support for the Palestinian People

On this occasion, he reiterated Tunisia's constant principled position in favor of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to establish an independent and sovereign state on all their occupied territories, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

Challenges and Reforms

He added that the current and emerging challenges facing the world call for an international system capable of responding to the aspirations of peoples, estimating that the UN's ability to guarantee international peace and security depends on our collective and sincere commitment to reviving the spirit of the Charter, in order to operate a qualitative transformation of the Organization's functioning and make it more capable of meeting present and future challenges.

Support for UN Reform

He reaffirmed Tunisia's support for the "UN 80" initiative launched by the Secretary-General, which aims to reform and modernize the Organization's functioning according to a clear and concrete roadmap, thus reaffirming respect for international legitimacy and international law, in accordance with the principle: "Leave no one behind."
