Tunisia Celebrates Mediterranean Coastal Day on September 25
Tunisia, like the rest of the countries in the region, will celebrate Mediterranean Coastal Day on September 25, announced the Agency for the Protection and Development of the Coast on Sunday. This annual event aims to promote the natural, economic, and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean coastal zone. The 2025 edition will honor institutions working to protect the coastal and marine environment, develop regulations, and make informed decisions. The goal is to build a better and more sustainable future for our coastal regions.
It is worth noting that the celebration of Mediterranean Coastal Day on September 25 every year marks the first ratification in 2009 of the Protocol on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) by Slovenia. This agreement stipulates the commitment of 21 Mediterranean countries to use smart planning to better manage and protect their coastal zones.
This Day is a regional initiative that highlights the vital importance of coastal zones for populations and the planet, and promotes solutions to ensure their long-term sustainability. Note that the Mediterranean coast is facing unprecedented challenges that have a direct impact on the 150 million people living along the coast, threatening their sources of income, ways of life, and well-being.
In fact, rapid urbanization and mass tourism are degrading fragile coastal ecosystems, while pollution, unsustainable resource exploitation, and habitat loss threaten marine biodiversity. Furthermore, the effects of climate change, which are manifesting 20% faster in the region than the global average, are amplifying all these threats.
