Tunisian Consumer Advocacy Group Calls for Boycott of Red Meat and Bananas
Lotfi Riahi, president of the Tunisian Consumer Orientation Organization, urged a boycott of red meat and bananas on Wednesday, denouncing a “sky‑rocketing” increase in their prices on the national market.
Speaking on Jawhara FM, Riahi explained that bananas, which were once imported to balance supply and stabilise prices, have now become a driver of inflation. He claims that a large portion of the bananas currently on sale comes from smuggling channels.
Riahi also stressed the need to strengthen controls and strictly enforce regulations to put an end to market overruns and disorganisation. He warned that the current situation encourages speculative practices that erode consumers’ purchasing power.
“The market is being hijacked by illegal trade and speculation, to the detriment of ordinary Tunisians,” Riahi said.
