Ministry of Trade and Export Development Announces Price Regulation for Bananas
The Ministry of Trade and Export Development announced on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a price regulation decision aimed at capping the retail price of bananas. According to the official statement, the maximum price is now set at 5 dinars per kilogram for bananas imported from Egypt, and at 7 dinars per kilogram for those from other origins. This measure comes in a context of soaring prices on the local market, particularly fueled by informal circuits and smuggling. The ministry specified that economic control services will be mobilized to enforce these tariff ceilings, particularly in unorganized points of sale. Quantities seized from smuggling or parallel circuits practicing excessive prices will be reinjected into regulated commercial circuits and resold at state-set tariffs. This action is part of the government's efforts to protect the purchasing power of Tunisian consumers, especially for heavily demanded everyday consumer products.
