Alarm Sounded Over Soaring Prices in Tunisia

The president of the Tunisian Organization for Consumer Guidance, Lotfi Riahi, sounded the alarm on Friday over the continuous surge in prices in Tunisia, stating that even a monthly income of 4,000 dinars is no longer sufficient to cover essential daily expenses.

Speaking on Express FM, Riahi emphasized that the rampant inflation is dangerously eroding the purchasing power of citizens, making the situation unbearable for a large portion of households. "There is no longer any possibility of saving. An income of 4,000 dinars barely suffices to live decently," he affirmed.

According to estimates, most Tunisian citizens receive around 1,000 dinars per month, of which 50 to 60% is absorbed by housing costs. "Almost 40% of salaries are devoted to rent. This is an alarming situation," Riahi added.

He estimates that a minimum of 3,000 dinars per month is required to meet vital needs in the current economic context. The prices of consumer products, services, and housing continue to rise without genuine regulation or mitigation strategies.

The organization's president concluded by stating that there is "no magic formula" to escape this crisis, but that structural reforms are necessary to restore purchasing power and guarantee the dignity of citizens.
